One of my favorite quotes about reading is from Dr. Seuss: "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you will go." I have found these words to be completely true in my life. I am a Texan through and through, and I wouldn't call myself a world traveler...yet, but books have taken me everywhere. Books, articles, even comic strips have helped shape the person I am today, and they are always leading me to new insight or new adventures.
Like physical exercise is important for the body, mental exercise is important for the brain. If you do not exercise your body, you lose muscle. If you do not exercise your brain during the summer, you can lose up to two months of math and reading achievement over the summer, according to Johns Hopkins School of Education. Who wants to do all that hard work all over again?! In either case, you can exercise while still having fun. It's not expensive, and the furthest you have to go is your local public library. I know the New Braunfels Public Library has many fun summer activities and programs, and it is not too late to participate. Just ask yourself the same question that I ask my kids when we go every week: What adventure do you want to go on today?
